Dearest readers,
Observing the comings and goings of Panthers these past few weeks has been a treat. I’ve made a few observations: teal is back in a big way. Coral too, but on a lower vibration. I keep seeing girls around campus in teal capris, teal tops, teal athleisure sets, and teal sweaters (despite the heat!!!!). Our friend Becca Vitale was photographed by Sophia this past week wearing what is perhaps the cutest teal tank top I’ve ever laid eyes on. I, personally, think this is part of a larger revival of the 2010s as we move further away from it. Of course, the teal/coral color combination is unbeatable, but I’ve also noticed metal studs, ballet flats, and especially polka dots (hallmark trends of the early 2010’s, especially in those ‘dream wedding’ pinterest boards circa 2012-2015) rise sharply in popularity upon my return to campus.

HOW TO DRESS FOR A HEATWAVE:
- Accessories are key!!
S: My accessories, especially my carabiner, help me feel cute despite my inability to dress up in the heat. I keep my carabiner pretty simple: A heart ring that just holds my housekey, my library card, and a tiny LPS charm. However, after talking to other students and seeing their carabiners, containing lip balms, bracelets, bottle openers, and so many creative charms, I’m feeling inspired to add more to my own.
- Wear bold colors and patterns!
A: Nothing excites me more than wearing a fresh coat of some glittery nail polish or a pair of statement earrings. I have an unsustainable collection of Essie nail polish but want to graduate to the good stuff (Death Valley Nails. Review coming soon). Shoes can also be a statement piece no matter the weather– my size youth 5 Adidas superstars have blue rubber soles! If all else fails, a bright lip will do the trick.

As much as I love the end of summer and the activities that come with it (reuniting with school friends, flower picking at Soergel’s, sitting out in Cathy lawn), I absolutely cannot stand the heat. Almost immediately after I exit my apartment, I’m drenched in sweat with ruined makeup, and it feels impossible to face Oakland’s hills.

To be honest, most days I’m so irritated by the heat that I can’t muster up the energy to put work into my appearance. As a result, my outfits have become very cut-and-paste. I usually wear jorts and an oversized t-shirt for maximum coolness. Recently though, I gave into Audrey’s previously mentioned teal craze and bought Brandy Melville’s teal Audrey Heapburn tank top.

I have to confess: it was my first ever trip to Brandy Melville.. There isn’t a Brandy anywhere near my hometown, and truthfully when I got here I just felt like I should avoid it because of the bad PR. But I have to admit there was a bit of a thrill in holding the tank top up in front of the taped-off fitting room mirror and trying to guess if it would fit on my body or not. Luckily it did!!! And it’s been one of my favorite tops ever since–the teal is perfect, and it makes me feel cute even dressed down in the heat. I guess this means I have to admit Brandy has won me over.
And with that, dearest readers, we’ll leave you to brave the final stretch of summer yourselves. Whether you’re tackling teal, piling charms onto your carabiner, or just throwing on your comfiest jorts and calling it a day, we hope you find little ways to make dressing for the heat more fun.
